Tomamos la ruta hacia el centro de la isla vía Deer Lake, visitada por última vez en invierno en el camino de St Johns a Nueva Escocia algunos años antes, luego vía Grand Falls hasta Cottlesville, donde habíamos reservado un lugar para trabajar y disfrutar del ambiente de la zona; salimos tarde así que los últimos 15 minutos fueron en la oscuridad de la noche, temiendo la embestida de un moose, pereciera un poco exagerado, pero en los días anteriores vimos moose en la carretera a plena Luz del día y fue muy impactante corroborar lo difícil que es diferenciarlos, el color de su pelaje se mimetiza con el entorno y a pesar de su tamaño no resulta fácil identificarlo con certeza.
We took the route towards the centre of the island via Deer Lake, last visited in winter en route from St Johns to Nova Scotia some years previously, then via Grand Falls to Cottlesville, where we had reserved a place to work and enjoy the atmosphere of the area; we left late so the last 15 minutes were in the darkness of the night, fearing a potentially deadly collision with a moose, which may seem a bit exaggerated, however in the previous days we had seen moose on the road in broad daylight and it was shocking to recognise how difficult it is to see them, the colour of their fur blending in with the environment, and despite their size it is not easy to identify them with certainty.
Al día siguiente un cuerpo de agua azul oscuro daba contexto a un conjunto de islas llenas de black spruce, sobre rocas rojizas y un baño de amarillo mostaza en los límites entre el agua y la tierra.
The next day a body of dark blue water gave context to a set of islands full of black spruce, on reddish rocks and with a surface of mustard yellow on the boundaries between water and land.
Cuando pudimos visitamos Twillingate, que por coincidencia estaba en las fiestas del pescado, si bien no pudimos asistir a ningunos de sus eventos, si pudimos apreciar las diferentes fuentes de orgullo e importancia local que se reflejaban en su programación. Este pueblo se auto defíne como la capital mundial de los icebergs, es un lugar vibrante, lo visitantes van y vienen, explorando los diferentes rincones del lugar. En nuestra segunda visita, al oeste dos día ballenas transitaban la bahía, con su respiración fuerte y su lenta cadencia llenaba el espacio en los segundos de su aparición, para dejar la atención lista hasta saciarla en la nueva columna de agua.
When we could we visited Twillingate, which by coincidence was during the fish festival; although we were not able to attend any of the events, we were able to appreciate the things that the community value in the programme. This town, calling itself the world capital of Icebergs, is a vibrant place; visitors come and go, exploring the different corners of the place. On our second visit, whales were passing through the bay to the west, with their strong breathing and slow cadence they filled the space during the seconds of their appearance, before submerging again into the depths.
Más al norte en el faro Crow Head, un acantilado extenso bordea la tierra cubierta de bosques bajos, y al fondo el iceberg junto con nuevas ballenas completan la imagen, junto con otros tantos será humanos moviéndose insaciablemente de un lugar a otro.
Further north at the Crow Head lighthouse, an extensive cliff borders the land covered with low forests, and in the background the icebergs along with more whales complete the image, along with many other humans moving insatiably from one place to another.
En ruta llegamos al Centro de Interpretación del pueblo originario Beothuk, que fue extinto con el contacto europeo, capaces de navegar el mar en canoas y reconocidos por su uso de ocre en los cuerpos. Diversos artefactos, así como la historia de su existencia y desaparición de encuentran en este lugar. Al salir a ver la exhibición externa, una tormenta con vientos fuertes, nubes oscuras y mucha agua nos sorprendió, para nuestro pesar el paisaje de la ruta del norte en la región central quedó sumergido en la niebla y diluido en el agua.
Continuing that day we arrived at the Memorial Centre for the Beothuk First Nation, memory center of the original people, driven to extinction with European contact, capable of navigating the sea in canoes and recognised for the use of ochre on their bodies. Various artifacts, as well as the history of their existence and disappearance, are found in this place. When we went out to see the external exhibition, a storm with strong winds, dark clouds, and a downpour surprised us. To our regret, the landscape of the subsequent route on the northern coast in the central region was submerged in fog and diluted in water.
En Terranova National park, llegamos al anochecer y disfrutamos una noche estrellada que ha sido escasa en nuestro viaje ante el predominio de nubes. al día siguiente, con la intención de pajarita tomamos un sendero al lado del Río, fue limitado en pájaros pero rico en frutos silvestres, luego exploramos los más importantes puntos del paisaje y el lado oeste de la haiga de Bonavista, para luego dirigirnos al este. Habíamos identificado la península de Bonavista en su lado oriental como un lugar clave para observar puffins, siembargo encontramos mucho más.
In Terranova National Park, we arrived at dusk and enjoyed a starry night that had been a scarcity on our trip due to the predominance of clouds. The next day, with the intention of birdwatching, we took a path next to the river; it was limited in birds but rich in wild berries; then we explored the most important points of the landscape and the west side of the Bonavista Bay, and then headed east . We had identified the Bonavista Peninsula on its eastern side as a key place to observe puffins, however we found much more.
Llegamos al atardecer y la actividad en las rocas estaba frenética, varias aves marinas volaban alrededor, las crías llamaban por comida y legions adultos defendían su territorio.
We arrived at dusk and activity on the rocks was frenetic, many seabirds were flying around, chicks were calling for food, and legions of adults were defending their territory.
Después de nuestro paso por esta región centro norte nos dirigimos a la costa sur, la historia la contaremos en el próximo post.
Following our time in this north central region we headed to the south coast, the story to be told in the next post.
