2023 Chapter 1 – BC and Alberta

2023 April 29 - May 21

 In April we returned to Canada to continue our exploration, started last year in the west and north, and to be continued across the country for six months. 

Volvimos a Canada en abril del 2023 para continuar nuestra exploración, comenzamos el año pasado en el occidente y el norte y continuaremos cruzando el país  (occidente, oriente, occidente) por seis meses. 

The plan: 

We stayed initially in Vancouver, visiting family, picking up the vehicle, installing the bed, now with our “Colombian mattress - used during our Australian trip” modified for the vehicle and brought to Canada on the flights in, and setting up for camping. It was good to connect with family, and spend some time in the “cherry blossom season”, with the neighbourhood being a tourist attraction at this time of year.

Estuvimos inicialmente en Vancouver, visitando la familia, organizando el carro de nuevo, instalamos la  cama, ahora con nuestro Colchón Colombiano, modificado para este vehículo y organizando todo para acampar. Se sintió muy bien conectar de nuevo con la familia y disfrutar de los cerezos florecidos, especialmente cuando el barrio se vuelve la principal a atracción turística en este momento del año.

After a little over a week we left Vancouver and headed east, initially to Salmon Arm, with stops at Farmhouse Natural Cheeses and Hope. In Salmon Arm we visited the wharf, had dinner, and enjoyed our first night of camping on this trip. The campsite proved unable to fulfil the evaluations on google maps, however we adjusted our expectations, and in the morning, after good coffee at Anvil Collective, walked the Foreshore/Raven trail, seeking birds there and back at the wharf. We lunched at Anvil Collective, then headed east, stopping at the Last Spike, Craigellachie, Crazy Creek Waterfall, and Revelstoke. Subsequently to Quinn Creek campground, seeing a few deer and our first black bear of the year on the way. The campsite proved to be a much better site than the one in Salmon Arm. We dined in front of a campfire and relaxed for the night, between the silence and the sounds of the train.

Después de un poco mas de una semana, dejamos Vancouver en dirección Este, inicialmente a Salmon Armonía, con paradas en Farmahouse Natural Cheeses y Hope. El campamento no fue capaz de demostrar las valoraciones ofrecidas en Google map, pero ante la ausencia de opciones ajustamos nuestras expectativas y en la mañana, después de un buen café, caminamos los senderos Foreshore & Raven, buscamos pájaros en las áreas inundablees alrededor del lago. Después de nuestro almuerzo, avanzamos al este stopping at the Last Spike, Craigellachie, Crazy Creek Waterfall, and Revelstoke, para finalmente llegar a nuestro campamento en Quinn Creek. Vimos varios venados y nuestro primer oso negro del año. Cenamos al frente del fuego y descansamos en la noche, entre el silencio y las huella sonoras del tren.

The following day took us to Radium Hot Springs (the town), with a stop to sketch looking over the wetland, and after lunch we walked the Old Coach Trail following which we stopped at the actual hot springs, set up at  Redstreak campground and walked the Redstreak Loop with excellent viewpoints just at the limits of the night. 

El siguiente día, llegamos a Radium Hot Springs, con una parada para dibujar mirando el pantanal y después del almuerzo caminamos el sendero del Old Coach, para luego parar en las aguas termales y sumergirnos en sus salidas aguas. Acampamos en Redstreak y desde allí, aprovechando la ultima luz del dia, hicimos la vuelta del mismo nombre con excelentes miradores. 

 

The following day took us through Kootenay National park, stopping at many of the viewpoints, including  Numa Falls and Marble Canyon where we walked the trail up the canyon. We reached a Kananaskis Lakes cabin owned by friends that afternoon, and enjoyed a wonderful stay for a couple of nights, taking in walks to the lake, on the Mount Everest Expedition Trail, and Blackshale Creek, to the suspension bridge and back. It was great to reconnect with our friends there and later in Calgary.

El día siguiente nos llevó a través del Parque Nacional Kootenay, deteniéndonos en muchos de los miradores, incluidos Numa Falls y Marble Canyon, donde caminamos por el sendero que sube por el cañón. Esa tarde llegamos a una cabaña en Kananaskis Lakes propiedad de amigos y disfrutamos de una estadía maravillosa durante un par de noches, realizando caminatas hasta el lago, por el sendero de expedición del Monte Everest y Blackshale Creek, hasta el puente colgante y de regreso. Fue genial volver a conectarnos con nuestros amigos allí y luego en Calgary.

We then crossed town to visit more friends whose hospitality we enjoyed over the following days, also catching up with more friends in Calgary, visiting the Authentic Indigenous art market, Contemporary Calgary, the Glenbow at Edison, and the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary.

Cruzamos la ciudad para visitar a más amigos cuya hospitalidad disfrutamos durante los días siguientes, también pudimos reunimos con más amigos en Calgary, así como disfrutar las delicias de la ciudad:  el mercado de arte indígena auténtico, el Calgary contemporáneo, el Glenbow at Edison y el Santuario de aves de Inglewood. 

Leaving Calgary took us to Horseshoe Canyon through a blowing gale and heavy smoke from forest fires; we walked through the canyon, as the wind and smoke died somewhat, then made our way to Drumheller, to visit the excellent Royal Tyrrell Museum, following which a brief visit to the hoodoos, not far away, before settling into the River Grove campground for the night.

                                                  

Al salir de Calgary nos dirigimos a Horseshoe Canyon a través de un vendaval y un denso humo de los incendios forestales; Caminamos por el cañón, mientras el viento y el humo amainaban un poco, luego nos dirigimos a Drumheller, para visitar el excelente Museo Royal Tyrrell, tras lo cual hicimos una breve visita a los Hoodoos, no muy lejos, antes de instalarnos en el campamento de River Grove para pasar la noche.

Heading north the following day took us through agricultural Alberta – not flat but gently undulating farming country – to Edmonton, or more accurately Stony Plain, where we visited friends and also camped one night further west at Wabamun Lake. We enjoyed walking Old Strathcona, the excellent Royal Alberta Museum, Alberta Gallery of Art, and Muttart Conservatory (as well as replacing the windscreen – which had been badly damaged by a rock thrown up on the highway the previous day). Outside Edmonton we walked at Wabamun Lake and at Chickakoo Lake. 

Al día siguiente, dirigirnos hacia el norte nos llevó a través de la Alberta agrícola (una zona agrícola no plana sino suavemente ondulada) hasta Edmonton, o más exactamente Stony Plain, donde visitamos a unos amigos y también acampamos una noche más al oeste, en el lago Wabamun. Disfrutamos caminando por Old Strathcona, el excelente Museo Real de Alberta, la Galería de Arte de Alberta y el Conservatorio Muttart (además de reemplazar el parabrisas, que había sido gravemente dañado por una piedra arrojada en la carretera el día anterior). Fuera de Edmonton caminamos por el lago Wabamun y el lago Chickakoo.

Throughout these days the smoke from forest fires further north was thick - it was surprising how much smoke there was!

Leaving Edmonton took us to Elk Island National Park, where we camped, seeing several bison during our stay, and appreciating the “Bison Tour” at the visitors’ centre. 

Al dejar Edmonton visitamos Elk Island National Park, en donde acampamos, avistamos bisonte y disfrutamos el tour sobre bisontes en el centro de visitantes. 

 

On leaving Elk Island we stopped at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, which proved to be very extensive, with guides providing lots of information on the Ukrainian immigrants to Alberta in the 1890s and subsequently. We particularly enjoyed learning about how a grain elevator works and saw the “elevator inside the elevator” which was really interesting. 

                                          

Al salir de Elk Island nos detuvimos en la Aldea del Patrimonio Cultural Ucraniano, que resultó ser muy extensa, con guías que brindaban mucha información sobre los inmigrantes ucranianos en Alberta en la década de 1890 y posteriormente. Disfrutamos especialmente aprendiendo cómo funciona un elevador de granos y vimos el “ascensor dentro del elevador”, lo cual fue realmente interesante.

 

Following this we stopped at the Beaverhill Bird Observatory, which took us through lakeside woods on a good walk, and then we headed eastwards into Saskatchewan, to be continued…

Paramos en el observatorio de aves Beaverhill , en donde hicimos una rica caminata por los bosques alrededor del lago, para seguir al este hacia Saskatchewan.
