Saskatchewan – Lac La Ronge

We entered Saskatchewan at Lloydminster and continued to the Battlefords, expecting to enter Fort Battleford, but it was closed. Still, we visited the Fred Light Museum, which was good in terms of military aspects, with an extensive firearms collection; however, it had a disappointing recognition of First Nations history. We continued to Saskatoon, which proved to be an attractive town, with river walks, tree-lined streets, some good places to eat, and an excellent art gallery: Remai Modern. From there, we could get to Wanuskewin Heritage Park, a great place to visit.
 
Entramos a Saskatchewan por Lloydminster y continuamos hasta los Battlefords, donde Fort Battleford estaba cerrado, sin embargo, logramos visitar el Museo Fred Light, excelente en aspectos militares, con una extensa colección de armas de fuego, pero con un reconocimiento decepcionante de la historia de las Primeras Naciones. Continuamos a Saskatoon, que resultó ser una ciudad atractiva, con paseos por el río, calles arboladas, algunos buenos lugares para comer y una excelente galería de arte: Remai Modern. También logramos ir al Wanuskewin Heritage Park, una visita de la que no nos arrepentimos.
 
From Saskatoon, the situation regarding forest fires allowed us to continue with our plan to move northwards, initially to Prince Albert National Park (where we saw bison), then northwards to walk the Narrows Peninsula trail, to Point View, and the Waskesiu River Trail. Finally, we arrived at La Ronge, a beautiful area with lakes and boreal forests. On our way, we saw a Black Bear and a Mother Black Bear with three cubs.
 
Desde Saskatoon, la situación de los incendios forestales permitió que continuaramos hacia el norte como estaba previsto, inicialmente hasta el Parque Nacional Prince Albert, donde vimos bisontes. Luego seguimos hacia el norte para caminar por el sendero de la península de Narrows hasta Point View y el sendero del río Waskesiu. Finalmente, llegamos a La Ronge, una hermosa zona con lagos y bosques boreales. En el camino, vimos un oso negro, así como a una madre oso negro con tres cachorros.

 

 

Here we are, ending the day and beginning to enjoy the fire that Alan created. The neighbour's music is a delicious company and the perfect complement to the temperature and landscape. Today is the first day of blue skies on this trip, and so the first day Marce doesn't have a jacket or coat on all day.

Aquí estamos, terminando el día y comenzando a disfrutar el fuego que Alan encendió. La música del vecino resulta una deliciosa compañía y el complemento perfecto para la temperatura y el paisaje. Hoy es el primer día de cielo azul en este viaje y por lo tanto el primer día en que no uso chaqueta o saco todo el día.
 
We woke up in Wania Bay after a rewarding night, enjoying a bright and embracing sunrise. Today we planned to explore the park to the north and then reach Flin Flon, however, as Marce usually enjoys, the plan didn’t go that way.

Amanecimos en Wania bay, después de una noche gratificante, disfrutando un amanecer luminoso y abrazador. Hoy exploraríamos el parque al norte para luego llegar a Flin Flon, y, tal como me gusta, eso no paso.
 
Extensive forest landscapes recovering from the fires of a few years ago, interrupted by small lakes and a winding road; the small mountains revealed a rocky soil that continuously transforms the landscape, and the constant change of view occupied the senses and captured our attention at several places, we spend our planned time on discovering the path and stopping for one or more photos.

Paisaje de bosques extensos que se recuperan de los incendios de hace algunos años, en el medio pequeños lagos y una carretera sinuosa; entre las pequeñas montañas se entrevía el suelo rocoso que transforma el paisaje continuamente, dándonos más de un motivo para detenernos y tomar una o más fotos.

 

We visited Otter Rapids, right where the bridge allows us to cross the Churchill River. On the way back, we stopped in Missinipe to have a coffee there, on the terrace looking at the lake, with a view of the landing and takeoff of the seaplanes, we decided to stay to explore the lake in a boat.

Visitamos Otters Rapids, justo en donde el puente permite cruzar el rio Churchill. De regreso paramos en Missinipe para tomarnos un café y allí, en la terraza mirando el lago, viendo el aterrizaje y despegue de los hidroaviones, decidimos quedarnos para explorar el lago en un bote.

It was a great exploration. The lake is immense and is part of the Churchill River drainage basin. It is surrounded and contained by rocky islands of mainly igneous origin, covered with boreal forest, or what remains after the fires. In some places, aspen is taking over the landscape; in others, the burned trunks of black spruce are all that remains.

Fue una exploración grandiosa, el lago es inmenso y hace parte de la cuenca hidrográfica del Río Churchill. Está rodeando y contenido por islas rocosas de origen principalmente ígneo, cubiertas con bosque boreal, o lo que queda de él después de los incendios. En algunos lugares el álamo está tomando el control del paisaje, en otros, los troncos quemados de abeto negro es lo único que queda.

Isaiah was our guide, and it was evident to us that his life has been on the water, in these waters. While Marce was able to understand our progress by making a constant effort to follow the orientation, based on the sunlight, Isaiah seemed to slide gracefully across the dance floor.

Isaiah fue nuestro guía, y fue evidente para nosotros que su vida ha transcurrido en el agua; en estas aguas. Mientras yo lograba entender nuestro avance haciendo un esfuerzo constante por seguir la orientación en función de la luz del sol, Isaiah parecía deslizarse con gracia por la pista de baile.

We visited the corners of the lake looking for birds and observing the cave paintings, the places reserved for memory, and the beautiful rock formations. Bald eagles, ospreys, ducks, and grebes were seen, and we finally got a closer look at the always distant loon.

Visitamos los rincones del lago buscando pájaros y observando la pintura rupestre; los lugares reservados para la memoria y las bellas formaciones rocosas. Logramos ver águilas calvas, águilas pescadoras, patos y somormujos. En esta expedición, el siempre distante colimbo grande finalmente se dejó apreciar más de cerca. 

The song of the little birds continues to fill the days with harmony. This time, the little Tennessee warbler accompanied us on the north route, and its song stayed with us until there was light.

El canto de los pequeños pájaros sigue llenando de armonía los días, esta vez la pequeña reinita de Tennessee nos acompañó en la ruta al norte y su canto permaneció con nosotros hasta que hubo luz. 

 

  

We left La Ronge to head to Flin Flon, which we’ll discuss shortly.

Dejamos La Ronge para tomar rumbo a Flin Flon, del que hablaremos pronto.
