Salimos tempranos de St Johns, el día sería largo y nos esperaban 650 km hasta dear lake. El día estaba fresco y algunas gotas de lluvia nos perseguían sin mucho éxito. La ruta nos tuvo fuera de la autopista por 80 km, permitiéndonos pasar por pequeños pueblos en nuestra ruta a Conceptio Bay. Finalmente llegamos a la HW 1 y comenzó el juego de la atención extrema y la velocidad sostenida.
We left St Johns early, the day would be long and 650 km to Deer Lake awaited us. The day was cool and some raindrops chased us without much success. The route took us off the highway for 80 km, allowing us to pass through small towns on our route to conception bay. Finally we reached Highway 1 and the game of extreme attention and sustained speed began.
No fue una ruta muy estimulante, paramos en Arnold’s cCove para visitar el santuario de aves: tres cuervos, un loon y una gaviotas a lo lejos fueron lo único visible. Seguramente en los meses de migración la zona está llena.
It was not a very stimulating route, we stopped at Arnold's Cove to visit the bird sanctuary: three crows, a loon, and a seagull in the distance were the only things visible. Surely during the migration months the area is full.
Seguimos 3 horas más hasta alcanzar Great Falls, allí un anuncio de la carretera nos informó sobre los murales de Botwood, así que lo visitamos y encontramos un Pedazo de la historia desconocido para nosotros.
We continued for three more hours until we reached Great Falls, there a road sign informed us about the Botwood murals, so we turned off to visit the town and found a piece of history unknown to us.
En la primera mitad del siglo 20, con el desarrollo de la aviación, este lugar fue el centro de los Flying boats, aviones diseñados para aterrizar en el agua únicamente y usados como transporte de lujo entre Europa y América del Norte, con la Segunda Guerra Mundial fueron usados como aviones de soporte y fueron claves en el manejo de incendios. Hasta 11 vuelos al día fueron manejados en el lugar y en de 1945, con el avance de la tecnología las operaciones cesaron, para dejar espacio a los recuerdos.
In the first half of the 20th century, with the development of aviation, this place was the centre for flying boats, aircraft designed to land on water only and used as luxury transport between Europe and North America; during World War II they were used as support aircraft and later were key in fire management. Up to eleven flights a day were handled at the site and in 1945, with advancing technology, flying boat operations at Botwood ceased, to make room for memories.

Esa noche camparíamos en un parque provincial cercano a Deer Lake, nos desviamos para tomar la ruta y nos encontramos metidos en una pequeña trocha, llena de huecos y zanjas profundas a lado y lado. 40 minutos después en la puerta del parque descubrimos una vía amplia y pavimentada, tal como lo dijo un guarda parque “uff, entraron por la puerta de atrás”.
That night we would camp in a provincial park near Deer Lake, we turned off to take the indicated route and found ourselves on a narrow dirt trail, full of potholes and with deep ditches on both sides. 40 minutes later at the park gate we discovered a wide, paved road; the Park Ranger said, “Huh, you came in through the back door.”
Después de la logística de la cena, nos dedicamos a contemplar el cielo estrellado, mientras fuimos capaces de mantener los ojos abiertos.
After the logistics of dinner, we dedicated ourselves to contemplating the starry sky, as long as we were able to keep our eyes open.
El día comenzó con cielo azul y una atmósfera luminosa, la principal razón para dormir en este parque fue la existencia de una catarata: Big Falls. Esta es una catarata poco profunda pero muy ancha, con con la luz y los colores del entorno resulta simplemente atractiva, primero la observamos de frente luego desde al lado de la caída y desde allí sorpresivamente, dos salmones saltaba aguas arriba, retornando hacia el lugar de nacimiento para su desove. Esta imagen común en los documentales, finalmente estaba en nuestra historia como un hecho acompañado de una emoción profunda, un momento ceremonial.
The following day began with blue sky and a bright atmosphere, the main reason for sleeping there was the existence of a waterfall: Big Falls. This is a shallow but very wide waterfall, with the light and colours of the environment it is simply attractive, first we observed it from the front then from the side of the fall and from there, surprisingly, two salmon jumped upstream, returning towards their birthplace to spawn. This image, common in documentaries, was finally in our history as a fact accompanied by deep emotion, a ceremonial moment.
Continuamos al sur, después de una corta y productiva exploración de Corner Brook, para finalmente quedar sorprendidos con la riqueza paisajística de la costa sur occidental que articula las montañas rocosas, el agua y la vegetación baja en mil imágenes difíciles de olvidar y elevan el deseo de quedarte en la isla por un tiempo más.
We continued south, after a short and productive exploration of Corner Brook, finally to be surprised by the rich landscape of the southwestern coast that articulates the rocky mountains, the water, and the low vegetation in a thousand images that are difficult to forget and which elevate the desire to stay on the island for a while longer.
Llegamos el ferry justo a tiempo
para registrarnos, organizarnos y esperar la llamada a abordar, tiempo en el
cual nuevas relaciones surgieron llenando el momento de nuevas conversación.
We arrived at the ferry just in time to register, organise ourselves, and wait for the call to board, during which time new relationships emerged, filling the moment with new conversations.
Después de nuestra estancia en Newfoundland cruzamos el mar hacia Nova Scotia (con mucho mejor tiempo que en la ocasión anterior), la historia la contaremos en el próximo post.
Following our time in Newfoundland we crossed the sea to Nova Scotia (in much better weather than on the previous occasion), the story to be told in the next post.
