Los pueblos de este / The Eastern Townships (Québec)

Esta región de Quebec principalmente agrícola está llena de pequeños poblados cargados de curiosidades locales y riqueza natural. Amanecimos en un campamento en St Joseph de Beauce, ubicado justo al lado del Río, que en su trayectoria tiene cambios de nivel creando una serie de pequeñas cascadas, que han tallado la roca a su paso, el nivel del agua no es muy alto, entonces fue posible apreciar las rocas pulidas, con surcos profundos y formas singulares.

 

This mainly agricultural region of Québec is full of small towns with local curiosities and natural wealth. We woke up in a camp in St Joseph de Beauce, located right next to the river, which in its path has changes in level creating a series of small waterfalls, which have carved the rock in its path; the water level is not very high; it was possible to appreciate the polished rocks, with deep grooves and unique shapes.

 

 

 

Tomamos la ruta al sur oriente, atravesando un terreno de colinas suaves, para deleitarnos en la calma del campo y su mosaico de verdes. Atravesamos el territorio transformador por las pilas de restos rocosos de la explotación de las minas de asbesto a que existieron en el lugar hasta 2012, cuando la última de ellas fue cerrada. Para luego transitar por una ruta más boscosa y cerrada hasta llegar a la región.

 

We took a route to the south east, crossing a terrain of gentle hills, to delight in the calm of the countryside and its mosaic of greens. We crossed the transforming territory through the piles of rock remains from the exploitation of the asbestos mines that existed in the place until 2012, when the last of them was closed, then travelling through a more wooded and closed in route until reaching the region which was our destination.

 

En Sherbrooke, caminamos por el centro haciendo la ruta de los murales, además de sentir la ciudad, pudimos acceder a las historias locales que alimentan el sentido de pertenencia y orgullo, casi al final del recorrido nos encontramos con una hermosa tienda de productos artesanales y artísticos de la región llenos de maestría y creatividad.

 

In Sherbrooke, we walked the mural route through the centre; in addition to feeling the city, we were able to appreciate the local stories which feed the sense of belonging and pride; almost at the end of the tour we found a beautiful store of artisan products and artists of the region full of mastery and creativity.

 

 

 

Seguimos a Magog, una calle principal que provoca el vagabundeo y una conjunto de parques que permiten el completo esparcimiento. Al norte oeste el Québec Parc National Mont-Orford Mélèze, nos recibió para pasar la noche.

 

We continued to Magog,with its main street that encourages wandering and a set of parks which allow complete recreation. To the north west, the Québec Parc National Mont-Orford Mélèze welcomed us to spend the night.

 

Un lugar tranquilo y espacioso rodeó nuestra estancia, y cuando la noche llegó lluvia, estrellas, mapaches y zorrillos nos visitaron, llenando el corazón de sorpresa y Alegría con sus presencias fugaces. Como siempre ese fuego rico que hace Alan nos acompañó reluciente hasta que nos abrazo el sueño.

 

A quiet and spacious place surrounded our stay, and when the night came rain, stars, raccoons, and skunks visited us, filling our hearts with surprise and joy with their fleeting presence. As always, that delicious fire that Alan makes accompanied us brilliantly until sleep embraced us.

 

Comenzamos más temprano, con el aire frío que activa cada célula del cuerpo y suficientemente placentero como para disfrutar ese sentido de activación. Fuimos a caminar por Boucle aux Tres Étangs - un bosque maduro con una alta diversidad de árboles y acceso a los diferentes lagos del lugar, Un sendero bien establecido que nos permitió un caminar energético. Salimos del parque para explorar Musée International D'Art Naïf de Magog. Allí la exhibición de un artista local, nos permitió apreciar su obra extensa, así como la diversidad de capacidades técnicas.

 

We started earlier the next day, with the cold air activating every cell in our bodies and pleasant enough to enjoy that sense of activation. We went for a walk through Boucle aux Tres Étangs - a mature forest with a high diversity of trees and access to the different lakes in the area – a well-established trail that allowed us an energetic walk. We left the park to explore the Musée International D'Art Naïf de Magog. There, the exhibition of a local artist allowed us to appreciate his extensive work, as well as the diversity of technical capabilities.

Después de nuestra estadía aquí, nos dirigimos nuevamente hacia el oeste, a Ontario, donde debíamos dejar el Wrangler con Rose y Justin y despegar para las celebraciones de dos aniversarios, Catriona's & Nick's en Vancouver, y Emma's & Gaz's en Grecia (como se registra en http://alanymarcemoreexploration.blogspot.com/2023/11/a-celebration-in-greece-athens-kythira.html?m=0 ).

 

Following our time here we headed westwards again, into Ontario, where we were to leave the Wrangler 

with Rose and Justin and take off for two anniversary celebrations, Catriona’s & Nick’s in Vancouver, and 

Emma’s & Gaz’s in Greece (as recorded at

 http://alanymarcemoreexploration.blogspot.com/2023/11/a-celebration-in-greece-athens-kythira.html?m=0 ).

De nuevo en Québec / Québec again

 

2023 August 22-23

 

Entramos nuevamente a Quebec esta vez al sol al sur del río Saint Loren’s. Los árboles empiezan a mostrar el cambio de tonalidad y hermosos racimos rojizos rompen con el verde extenso del paisaje.

 

We entered Quebec again this time south of the Saint Lawrence River. The trees were beginning to show the change in tone and beautiful reddish clusters broke the extensive green of the landscape.

 

Los campos ahora sembrados y con el follaje exuberante parecen tapices abullonados diseñados para el sueño de gigantes, en este lugar verde y amarillo trigo comparten las franjas de cultivo creando laderas de montañas de verdes en degradé.

 

The fields now planted and with lush foliage looked like puff pastries designed for the dreams of giants; in this place green and yellow wheat share the strips of crops creating mountain slopes of shades of green.

 

El terreno es de colinas montañosas a través de los cuales las rutas se deslizan suavemente dejándonos disfrutar las delicias de la gravedad . Después de cruzar varios conjuntos de montañas llegamos a la ruta al parque nacional BIC, llegamos cerca la tardecer para explorar en la esquina más remota, hacia el éste. Después de un pequeño sendero llegamos a la costa para apreciar las focas del Atlántico la luz iluminaba las montañas y los pequeños prominencias de roca en el agua como una forma extraña gravitacional atención una pequeña poca reposaba sobre una roca un cacho de Luna, que a pesar de algunos pequeños movimientos, permanecia en la misma posición con el paso del tiempo, eran focas de puerto. Pequeñas, con un cuerpo redondeado y compacto descansaban sobre las rocas de medio lado, jugando con los pequeños movimientos de su cuerpo apenas evidentes. Cuando la conciencia se familiarizó con la forma, muchas más focas aparecieron en el paisaje.

 

The terrain is mountainous hills through which the roads slide gently, letting us enjoy the delights of gravity. After crossing several ridges of mountains we reached the route to the national park du Bic, arriving around evening to explore the most remote corner, towards the east. After a short walk we arrived at the coast to appreciate the Atlantic seals. The light illuminated the mountains and the small prominences of rock in the water seemed like strange gravitational shapes. Attention was drawn to things resting on a rock, a piece of moonrock, perhaps; despite subtle movements, they remained in the same position over time - they were harbour seals. Small, with a rounded and compact body, they rested on the rocks on their sides, playing with the small movements of their barely evident bodies. As we became familiar with the shape, many more seals appeared on the landscape.

 

 A pesar del repelente los mosquitos nos mordían de forma feroz así que decidimos regresar y justo al llegar al carro pequeño zorro rojo de patas negras exploraba todas las mesas del área de recreación, su andar sigiloso y su agilidad es un espectáculo placentero de apreciar para en segundos verlo desaparecer entre los árboles.

 

Despite repellent, the mosquitoes bit us fiercely so we decided to return and just when we got to the car, a little red fox with black legs explored all the tables in the recreation area. Its stealthy step and agility is a pleasant spectacle to appreciate for everyone. Seconds later to see him disappear between the trees

 

En el campamento el cielo estaba estrellado y por primera vez en mucho tiempo no habían nubes, la temperatura cayó rápidamente y el fuego fue un gran motivo de quietud y regocijo, después de una cena deliciosa.

 

At the campsite the sky was starry and for the first time in a long time there were no clouds, the temperature dropped quickly and the fire was a great reason for stillness and rejoicing, after a delicious dinner.

 

Comenzamos el día caminabais por el sendero principal del parque, una ruta al lado norte de la península por la costa, la marea estaba bajando y rápidamente el suelo del mar apareció dando paso a las formas curiosas de las algas, las pequeñas piscinas en la roca y las formas de la erosión en las estructuras expuestas. Infiltrados de colores rojizos en las rocas verdes, miles de capas de roca expuestas y cuarzo atravesándose como brochazos de cal en las rocas más grisáceas resultaron una fuente de curiosidad y asombro permanente.  En la playa más distante comenzamos a observar pequeñas formas rosadas, eran camarones secos por el sol, que al bajar la marean quedan expuesto en el piso rocoso, sabían delicioso, así que caminamos tomando algunos bocadillos. En el extremo del sendero, el afloramiento rocoso es más grande y ofrece una saliente hacia el mar que llena la vida de curiosidad y que puede ser atravesada solo cuando la marea baja y permite descubrir la ruta de acceso.

 

We started the next day walking along the main path of the park, a route to the north side of the peninsula along the coast; the tide was going out and quickly the sea floor appeared giving way to the curious shapes of the algae, the small pools in the rock, and the forms of erosion on exposed structures. Infiltrated with reddish colors in the green rocks, thousands of layers of exposed rock and quartz crossing like brushes of lime in the grayest rocks were a source of permanent curiosity and amazement. On the most distant beach we began to observe small pink shapes; they were sun-dried shrimp, which when the tide went out were exposed on the rocky floor; they tasted delicious, so we walked around having some snacks. At the end of the path, the rocky outcrop is larger and offers a protrusion towards the sea that fills life with curiosity and that can be crossed only when the tide goes out and allows the access route to be discovered.

 

 

 

De regreso, el sendero nos sorprendió con múltiples hongos, que comienzas a aparecer en abundancia en el bosque. Ese es un mundo aún por descubrir, del cual no sabemos nada.

 

On the way back, the trail surprised us with many mushrooms, which began to appear in abundance in the forest. This is a world yet to be discovered, about which we know nothing.

 

En ruta hacia Sherbrooke, nos detuvimos en una micro cervecería llena de carácter, comimos las delicias del lugar y seguimos la ruta, una autopista grande, espaciosa que nos dejó ver la extensión de los cultivos y la vocación agrícola en el lugar.

 

On the way to Sherbrooke, we stopped at a microbrewery full of character, we ate the delicacies of the place and then continued on our way,on  a large, spacious highway that allowed us to see the extent of the crops and the agricultural vocation in the place.

 

Ahora continuamos hacia el sur hasta los “Eastern Townships”, la historia que contaremos en la próxima publicación.

PEI and New Brunswick

 Después de 5 días de conversaciones, risas, buena comida y clases salimos de la Casa de Jan y Rolf para explorar Prince Edward Island - PEI.

 

After 5 days of conversations, laughter, good food and classes we left Jan's and Rolf's House to explore Prince Edward Island - PEI. 

 

En ruta paramos en Joggins Fossil Cliffs, un lugar patrimonio de la humanidad con una extensa colección de fósiles del carbonifero. Tomamos el tour disponible que nos permitió comprender mejor las formaciones y la importancia del lugar, para luego explorar la playa y los acantilados por nuestra cuenta. Durante nuestra caminata fue sorprendente percibir el cambio en el paisaje con la marea, los arrecifes antes cubiertos aparecieron en escena cubiertos de algas marinas, los perfiles de limestones evidentes en la playa de abrieron paso por cientos de metros y el agua antes azul oscura, se tornó roja y amarilla. Que delicioso espectáculo.

 

En route we stopped at Joggins Fossil Cliffs, a world heritage site with an extensive collection of carboniferous fossils. We took the available tour which allowed us better to understand the formations and importance of the place and then explore the beach and cliffs on our own. During our walk it was surprising to perceive the change in the landscape with the tide, the previously covered reefs appeared on the scene covered in seaweed, the limestone profiles evident on the beach opened their way for hundreds of metres and the previously dark blue water turned red and yellow. What a delicious spectacle.

 

Llegamos al puente de la confederación que permite acceder a PEI, justo antes de cruzar una reserva natural habita debajo del puente, su centro de interpretación nos permitió tener una idea clara de las aves del area, la condición actual de su habitad, y sus amenazas. Caminamos hasta el faro y disfrutamos nuevo frutos, ahora más moras. Mirando hacia el norte, el puente se presente como una estructura infinita que parece conectar la tierra con las nubes, por su cambio de dirección no es posible ver el punto de llegada.

 

We arrived at the Confederation Bridge which gives access to PEI, just before crossing a natural reserve under the bridge. Its interpretation centre gave us a clear idea of the birds in the area, the current condition of their habitat, and the threats they face . We walked to the lighthouse and enjoyed new fruit, now more blackberries. Looking towards the north, the bridge appears as an infinite structure that seems to connect the earth with the clouds, owing to its change of direction it is not possible to see the arrival point.

 

Finalmente estábamos en PEI, elegimos dirigirnos al noroccidental, lo que llaman el circuito norte. La tierra en PEI, es un paisaje creado por humanos, la tierra se organiza en bandas, dedicadas al cultivo de diversos productos, al momento maíz y papas predominan, mientras los lotes de heno están secos con su color arena brillante característico.

 

Finally we were in PEI; we chose to head northwest, taking what they call the northern loop. The land in PEI is a landscape created by humans, the land is organiszed into bands, dedicated to the cultivation of various products, at the moment corn and potatoes predominate, while the hay plots are dry with their characteristic bright sand colour. 

 

 

La casas se presentan en las pequeñas elevaciones, rodeadas por extensos jardines de pasto, en los que es frecuente encontrar a un persona en su pequeña cortadora de pasto, como jugando a los carritos. Las rutas están al servicio de la actividad agrícola y sus superficies son tan irregulares como la variedad de maquinaria necesaria para labrar la tierra.

 

The houses are located on small elevations, surrounded by extensive grass gardens, where it is common to find a person on a small lawnmower, as if playing go-carts. The routes are at the service of agricultural activity and their surfaces are as irregular as the variety of machinery necessary to till the land.

 

 

Los parques provinciales, ofrecen en conjunto rico de ecosistemas protegidos y la mitad de ellos cuentan con facilidades para acampar, equipadas con elementos básicos para una estancia cómoda, y se ubican cerca del agua con acceso a las playas y vista de los acantilados.

 

The provincial parks offer a rich set of protected ecosystems and half of them have camping facilities, equipped with basic elements for a comfortable stay, and are located near the water with access to the beaches and views of the cliffs.

 

 

El parque nacional PEI, protege tres ecosistemas diferentes, las tierras rojas. La zona costera baja con playas de arena amarilla y las dunas con el mágico mundo verde que la contiene.  La primera parte, se integra con el legado literario creado por J.p. Montgomery “Anne”y protege el paisaje honrado a través de sus libros, l exhibición permite comprender la historia de esta escritora y su conttibucion.

 

PEI National Park protects three different ecosystems, the red lands, the low coastal area with yellow sand beaches, and the dunes with the magical green world which contains them. The first part is integrated with the literary legacy created by J.P. Montgomery – author of “Anne of Green Gables” - and protects the landscape honoured through her books; the exhibition allowed us to understand the history of this writer and her contribution.

 

 

Charlottetown demostró ser una ciudad con una atmósfera positiva; Tuvimos mucha suerte de encontrarnos con Noella Moore y sus hermanas Annie y Bonnie. Noella es una maestra tejedora de cestas, y Marce se sintió bienvenida y aprendió a hacer su primera cesta.

 

Charlottetown proved to be a town with a positive atmosphere; we were very fortunate to encounter Noella Moore and her sisters Annie and Bonnie. Noella is a master basketweaver, and Marce found herself welcomed and learned to make her first basket! 

 

 

Otro lugar que nos dio una idea de la Primera Nación Mi'kmaq fue el Centro Cultural Mi'kmaq de la Isla Lennox, donde Pete nos mostró los alrededores y nos ayudó a apreciar la historia y la cultura de esta Primera Nación, no solo en PEI sino también en la región.

 

Another place which gave us insight into the Mi’kmaq First Nation was the Lennox Island Mi'kmaq Culture Centre where Pete showed us around and helped us appreciate the history and culture of this First Nation, not only on PEI but also in the region.

 

PEI es conocida por sus ostras, disfrutamos de una variedad durante nuestra estancia, desde deliciosa hasta adecuada. también es famosa por sus faros, muchos de los cuales visitamos en todos los rincones de la isla. Otro espectáculo de luces fueron las lluvias de meteoritos de las Perseidas, que disfrutamos viendo en lo que afortunadamente eran noches despejadas.

 

PEI is known for its oysters; we enjoyed a variety during our stay, ranging from delicious to adequate. PEI is also known for its lighthouses, many of which we visited on all corners of the island. Another light display was the Perseid Meteor Showers, which we enjoyed seeing on what were fortunately clear nights.

 

Cruzamos el Puente de la Confederación de regreso al continente y nos dirigimos a New Brunswick: el Parque Provincial Hopewell Rocks y el Parque Nacional Fundy nos dieron la bienvenida al área de Funday Bay. Caminamos por el sendero del río Wolfe, exploramos las cuevas marinas y nos dirigimos hacia el sur. Huntsman Aquarium demostró que valió la pena la visita, y luego visitamos St Andrews y después del té caminamos por la ciudad, incluida una parada en China Chest, donde descubrimos que la propietaria, Nancy, fue generosa una vez que se rompió el hielo.

 

We crossed the Confederation Bridge back to the mainland, and headed into  New Brunswick - Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park and Fundy National Park welcomed us to the Fundy Bay area. We walked the Wolfe River trail, explored the sea caves, and headed southwards. Huntsman Aquarium proved worth the visit, and then we visited St Andrews and after tea walked the town including a stop at China Chest where we found the owner, Nancy, to be generous once the ice had been broken. 

 

 

El Parque Natural Irving en St John ofrece a los lugareños un soplo de aire fresco en sus paseos, literalmente. Acampamos en Rockwood Park y por la mañana nos detuvimos para ver Reversing Falls antes de dirigirnos hacia el norte por la antigua carretera, parando en el excelente mercado de agricultores de Gagetown.

 

Irving  Nature Park at St John gives locals a breath of  fresh air on its walks, literally. We camped at Rockwood Park snd in the morning stopped to see the Reversing Falls before heading north on the old road, stopping at the excellent Gagetown Farmers’ Market.

 

Al llegar a Fredericton fuimos a la Galería de Arte Beaverbrook, donde disfrutamos de la exposición y del café, y luego cruzamos el río hasta el famoso Picaroon's para tomar un refrigerio y una cerveza local.  En Nackawic hicimos una breve parada para dar un paseo junto al río y contemplar el "hacha más grande del mundo". Hartland afirma tener el puente cubierto más largo de Canadá. … ¿en el mundo?

 

 

Arriving in Fredericton we went to the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, where we enjoyed the exhibition as well as the café, later crossing the river to the famed Picaroon’s for a snack and a local beer. At Nackawic we made a brief stop for a riverside walk and a view of “World’s largest Axe”. Hartland claims to have the longest covered bridge – in Canada? … in the world? 

 

New Brunswick resultó ser una provincia interesante: variada, rural, bilingüe, con mucho interés y que volveremos a explorar más a fondo.

 

New Brunswick turned out to be an interesting province - varied, rural, bilingual, with lots of interest, and to which we will return to explore further.

 

 

Después de nuestro tiempo en New Brunswick volvemos a Québec,  la historia que se contará en la próxima publicación.
