La ruta del norte / The Northern Route west

Elegimos tomar la ruta del norte, para conocerla. Inicialmente, un trazado ondulado y solitario nos permitió conectar con la ruta principal, en presencia de bosque boreal de nuevo, la paleta de colores cambio con un predominio de verdes y amarillos.

 

We chose to take the northern route west, to get to know it. Initially, an undulating and solitary route allowed us to connect with the main route, in the presence of boreal forest again, the colour palette changed with a predominance of greens and yellows.

 

La primera parte de la ruta es una zona mas poblada, con zonas urbanas pequeñas y de vocación agrícola. Luego una extensa ruta se despliega hacia el frente, con apenas algunos cambios suaves de dirección por los siguientes 500 km.

 

The first part of the route is a more populated area, with small urban areas in an agricultural setting. Then an extensive route unfolded towards in front of us, with just a few gentle changes of direction for the next 500 km.

 

La ausencia de viajeros y el inevitable cierre de los campamentos, hacen difícil encontrar un lugar para dormir, así que fue necesario desviarnos hacia el norte para dormir en un campamento de pescadores en las orillas del Lago Ritchie.

 

The absence of travellers and the inevitable closure of the campsites made it difficult to find a place to sleep, so we detoured north off the highway to camp at a fishing camp on the shores of Lake Ritchie.

 

 

 

Las planchas de concreto de una edificación ya desmantelada nos sirvieron de base de campamento y allí, entre el frío y las amenazas de lluvia preparamos el fuego, disfrutamos la cena y nos deleitamos en los sonidos de la noche.

The concrete slabs of a dismantled building served as a camp base and there, between the cold and the threat of rain, we prepared the fire, enjoyed dinner, and delighted in the sounds of the night.

 

 

 

 

Llovió al amanecer, sin mayor opción retomamos la ruta destapada y lenta en algunos momentos pero en general fácil de transitar. 

 

It rained at dawn, without much option we returned via the unsurfaced track, slow at times but generally easy to navigate.

Una vez en la ruta principal continuamos al occidente, esperando encontrar un lugar para desayunar más adelante. Cómo ya sabíamos los restaurantes en las estaciones de servicio son la opción de esta zona y sin mayor duda, disfrutamos la tradición: café, muchos huevos y muchos papas frías. 

Once on the main road we continued west, hoping to find a place to have breakfast later. As we already knew, restaurants at gas stations are the principal option in this area and without a doubt, we enjoyed the tradition: coffee, lots of eggs, and lots of chips.

 

En Nipigon, las formaciones rojas, aparecen en el paisaje como injertos, ojos de una montaña que se despierta trasnochada. La autopista de varios carriles representa un gran desafío para fotografiarla y los cables de la Luz que la acompañan no facilitan la tarea.

 

In Nipigon, the red formations appear in the landscape like grafts, eyes of a mountain that wakes up late at night. The multi-lane highway represents a great challenge to photography and the ubiquitous electrical cables that accompany the road do not make the task easier.

 

Continuamos hacia el sur hasta llegar a la cascada Kakabeka, esta vez dormiríamos allí. El aire estaba caliente una ola de calor bebo del sur, aprovechamos para tomar una ducha y lavar las ropas, mientras lentamente cumplíamos con las rutinas propias de cada día y relajábamos la atención, los músculos no habían terminado de relajarse cuando las primeras gotas cayeron. Nos activamos de inmediato, terminamos de recoger los objetos desplegados y entramos al carro justo antes de una tormenta inigualable.

 

We continued south until we reached the Kakabeka waterfalls; this time we would sleep there. The air was hot - a heat wave from the south, we took the opportunity to take a shower and wash our clothes, while we slowly carried out our daily routines and relaxed our attention, our muscles had not finished relaxing when the first drops fell. We acted immediately, finished collecting everything outside, and got into the car just before an unparalleled storm.

 

Cuando nos levantamos al día siguiente no están lloviendo, todo estaba húmedo y con el agua, nuevos grupos de hongos emergieron a la luz, un grouse se movía entre el Bosque cercano y las bandadas de gansos sobrevolaban en dirección sur con su disciplinada Formación en V.

 

When we got up the next day it was not raining, everything was wet and with the water, new groups of mushrooms had emerged into the light, a grouse moved through the nearby forest and flocks of geese flew over in a southerly direction with their disciplined V formation.

 

Tomamos la ruta hacia Winnipeg, la Lluvia y los vientos fuertes nos acompañaron durante el Viaje. Nos detuvimos en la Bahía Vermillon para disfrutar de un Almuerzo ligero, los hermosos árboles de hojas amarillas nos acompañaron con su melodía de tonos bajos impulsada por el viento.

 

We took the route to Winnipeg, the rain and strong winds accompanying us during the trip. We stopped at Vermilion Bay to enjoy a light lunch, the beautiful yellow-leaved trees accompanying us with their low-pitched melody driven by the wind.

 

La ruta sinuosa, rica en aguas y bellas rocas de Ontario se desvaneció en las planicies de Manitoba perturbadas por un cíelo lleno de nubarrones y un aguacero casi permanente.

 

The winding route, rich in waters and the beautiful rocks of Ontario, vanished in the plains of Manitoba disturbed by a sky full of dark clouds and an almost permanent downpour.

 

Llegamos a acampar justo cuando llegó la noche, logramos organizarnos, disponer el fuego y en un instante fue necesario prender la luz para terminar de cocinar. El viento seguía fuerte y la cena caliente fue una gran placer, lastimosamente la lluvia volvió y con ella los ojos se cerraron envueltos en el sueño.

 

We arrived to camp just as night came, we managed to organise ourselves, set up the fire and in an instant it was necessary to turn on the light to finish cooking. The wind was still strong and the hot dinner was a great pleasure, unfortunately the rain returned and with it our eyes closed wrapped in sleep.

 

Retomamos la ruta de nuevo en medio del aguacero y contrario a mis apuestas encontramos un lugar para desayunar en Portage La Prairie, Lita’s station.

 

We took the road again in the middle of the downpour and contrary to Marce’s bet we found a place to have breakfast in Portage La Prairie: Lita's station.

 

Entramos al lugar y una decoración de trenes nos sorprendió, claramente éramos los únicos visitantes que no habitamos en este lugar, los demás comensales eran locales.

Un hombre mayor pero cálido y energético nos invitó a la mesa y pronto se aproximó para tomarnos el pedido. Luego de algunas interacciones alrededor de la comida tomo nuestra orden y puso en espera la respuesta a nuestra pregunta sobre el Tema del Lugar.

 

We entered the place and its railway decor surprised us; clearly we were the only visitors who did not live in this town - the other diners were locals. An older but warm and energetic man invited us to the table and soon came over to take our order. After some interactions around the food he took our order and put on hold the answer to our question about the Café’s theme.

 

Acercó una silla y nos relató su historia: un experto soldador, creo un tren de juguete para su sobrino, los domingos después de la misa las familias del lugar comenzaron a visitar tu casa para que sus niños pudieran usar el tren, así las cosas se vio obligado a crear algo más grande para la comunidad y así comenzó una empresa de construcción de esto modelos que resultó muy exitosa. Uno de sus sueños se hizo posible,  Comprar un lugar que le permitiera trabajar cerca de casa, así creo el primer restaurante usando la temática de los trenes y aprovechando los recursos disponibles de su negocio anterior. Cuando decidió retirarse, vendió el Local, que fue desmantelado para establecer una clínica, los planes de negocio de su nuevo dueño no prosperaron y entregó el local como parte de pago.

 

He pulled out a chair and told us his story: an expert welder, he had created a toy train for his nephew;, on Sundays after mass the local families began to visit his house so that their children could use the train, that's how things started. He was forced to create something bigger for the community and so he started a business making these models,that was very successful. One of his dreams became possible, buying a place that would allow him to work close to home, thus creating the first restaurant using the theme of trains and taking advantage of the resources available from his previous business. When he decided to retire, he sold the premises, which were dismantled to establish a clinic. The business plans of his new owner did not prosper and he returned the premises as part of the payment. So within days he restored the facility and began this new chapter of the story.

 

De la cocina salieron nuestros desayunos y con ellos comenzaron una serie de juegos y bromas que salen de sus bolsillos, tazas diminutos, cucharas gigantes, ojos de plástico, culebras y otros juguetes que sorprenden y obligan una interacción divertida.

 

Our breakfasts came out of the kitchen and with them began a series of games and jokes that come out of his pockets: tiny cups, giant spoons, plastic eyes, snakes, and other toys that surprise and create an enjoyable interaction.

 

Seguimos nuestra ruta a Brandon para visitar la galería de arte, el día era luminoso y frío, llegamos hacia el final de la mañana y centro de la ciudad se sentía solitario, excepto por las personas esperando el almuerzo en el banco de alimentos. Visitamos la galería y disfrutamos una exhibición sobre naturaleza y tecnología, que nos atravesó con la tensión propuesta.

 

We continued our route to Brandon to visit the excellent Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba, the day was bright and cold. We arrived towards the end of the morning and the city centre felt lonely, except for the people waiting for lunch at the food bank. We visited the gallery and enjoyed an exhibition about nature and technology.

 

Continuamos la ruta a Regina, la lluvia intermitente, las nubes y sus rápidos movimientos con el viento, hicieron del trayecto una fiesta del paisaje, el agua incrementó el brillo de los colores y las nubes cambiaron constantemente la vista en la ruta.

 

We continued the route to Regina; the intermittent rain, the clouds, and their scudding with the wind made the journey a celebration of the landscape, the water increased the brightness of the colours and the clouds constantly changed the view on the road.

 

Llegamos a Regina con tiempo para disfrutar el Museo Real de Saskatchewan, una de las galerías de arte, y una cena divertida.

 

We arrived in Regina with time to enjoy the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, one of the art galleries, and a good dinner.

 

 

 

Después de esta parte del viaje continuamos hacia el oeste a través de Saskatchewan, Alberta y Columbia Británica para finalizar el viaje de este año por Canadá.

 

Following this part of the trip we continued westwards across Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia to end this year’s trip through Canada.
